Title: Letters from an Iowa Soldier in the Civil War,
Description: An affecting and unusual resource, this site maintains a collection of letters written by Newton Scott, a private in the 36th Infantry, Iowa Volunteers, during the Civil War. During the three years he served, Scott wrote letters to his sweetheart and parents. Here the letters are transcribed as written, without changes to the spelling or punctuation. Also included are Scott's service record, his obituary, and links to other Civil War information on the Net. This simple site is well designed and adds a very personal note to the many Civil War resources already available. Congratulations to William Scott Proudfoot, a librarian at West Valley College in Saratoga, California, who says he developed the project just "to see if I could do it!"
